The iPhone Duo Finally Gets Reachability for One-Handed Use
Apple's foldable is getting easier to hold. With iOS 27.3, the iPhone Duo gains Reachability, the one-handed mode that pulls the top of the screen down within thumb's reach — and the Duo's StandBy features are coming to other iPhones too.
Apple seeded the first developer beta of iOS 27.3 on November 3, and the update is expected to reach all users in December. Reachability was one of the few everyday iPhone features missing from the Duo at launch, and its arrival shows Apple is still tuning the foldable's software weeks after it went on sale.
Why Reachability matters on a foldable
Reachability has been on iPhones since the iPhone 6: swipe down on the Home indicator and the top of the screen drops to the middle, so you can tap a button at the top without stretching your thumb or using two hands. On the Duo, which unfolds into a much taller and wider display than a regular iPhone, that reach is even harder — which is why its absence was noticeable.
The feature matters more than usual for the Duo because the phone's size is both its appeal and its problem. Some early owners have reported that the foldable's display is cracking near the hinge, and Apple has been replacing affected units. A phone that is easier to hold one-handed is a phone less likely to be dropped — though Reachability is a software convenience, not a fix for the hardware issue.
StandBy spreads to other iPhones
The same update expands the Duo's StandBy features to other iPhone models. StandBy turns an iPhone into a bedside display when it is charging on its side, showing the clock, widgets and Live Activities. The Duo had exclusive StandBy features at launch; with iOS 27.3, those come to the rest of the lineup, and StandBy itself gains refreshed analog and digital watch faces plus new Calendar and Weather faces.
