Tesla Adds a Cybertruck Shift to Clear the Backlog Before the Line Comes Down
Tesla will add an extra production shift to try to complete outstanding Cybertruck orders before the line is dismantled next year, as the company clears the way for a planned expansion of Cybercab production.
Chief executive Elon Musk said on Saturday that the additional shift is aimed at the Cybertruck's order backlog, which he said is far larger than what Tesla can build before the line comes down.
"The Cybertruck order backlog is currently far more than Tesla can make before dismantling the line for Cybercab expansion around June/July next year," Musk said in a post on X.
The move follows Tesla's decision to wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory, with the line set to be dismantled around the middle of next year so the factory can focus on the Cybercab, Tesla's planned self-driving taxi.
For buyers still waiting, the extra shift is Tesla's attempt to work through as many orders as possible before that deadline. For the company, it is a final push on a vehicle that never reached the sales volumes Tesla once hoped for, before the factory floor is handed over to its robotaxi plans.
