Waymo plans fleet expansion to 20,000 vehicles, report says
Waymo plans to grow its autonomous ride-hailing fleet fivefold to 20,000 vehicles by the end of next year, Semafor reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters said Waymo did not immediately respond to comment.
The Alphabet unit has about 4,000 cars and wants 8,000 by the end of this year. The plan follows a $5 billion loan secured from lenders including PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street.
Waymo has said the financing will support expansion in the United States and internationally. Earlier this year, the company closed a $16 billion equity round at a $126 billion valuation, Reuters said.
The numbers describe a reported plan, not a confirmed delivery schedule. Scaling requires vehicles, operating teams, charging and maintenance capacity, and regulatory and safety work in each market. This is separate from any local launch story and does not establish a commitment to a particular city.
