Apple's New M6 iMac Skips a Generation and Doubles the Graphics Speed

Apple's all-in-one desktop just got a big jump. The new 24-inch iMac with the M6 chip is on sale now from $1,499, skipping the M5 entirely, with up to twice the graphics speed of the M4 model, Wi-Fi 7, and the same seven-colour design.

Apple announced the iMac with M6 by press release on October 27 and put it on sale on Friday, November 6, alongside the OLED iPad mini and the new MacBook Pro models. It is the first update to the iMac since the M4 model, and Apple has jumped straight past the M5 generation.

M6 power, up to 12 cores

The new iMac is powered by Apple's M6 chip, with up to a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU. Apple claims graphics up to twice as fast as the previous generation, alongside the usual gains for everyday work, photo editing and gaming. The base model, at $1,499, has a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU.

Connectivity also moves forward: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are standard, and there is an optional 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port built into the power adapter on higher configurations. The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, the slim design and the seven-colour lineup — blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green and silver — all carry over from the M4 iMac.

Part of Apple's biggest Mac week

The iMac is one of five Apple products that went on sale on November 6: the OLED iPad mini, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, and the two touchscreen MacBook Pro models with PROLED XDR displays. Apple announced the whole lineup across three days in late October, wrapping up with its "Pro and tell" event in Los Angeles on October 28.

The M6 iMac is available now from Apple's online store, the Apple Store app and Apple Stores, with the first pre-orders arriving to customers on launch day. In Canada the 24-inch iMac with M6 starts at $2,099 CAD.
