Ukraine Says Russia Has Intensified Attacks on Digital Infrastructure
Kyiv urges government agencies to strengthen cyber defenses
Russia is attacking Ukraine’s digital infrastructure with the same systematic intensity as its power network, Ukraine’s prime minister said on Friday. Sergiy Koretskyi urged state agencies and institutions to form cybersecurity teams and improve their ability to withstand attacks on information systems and businesses.
Koretskyi said 10 data centres in Kyiv had been struck during the previous month. He also warned that cyberattacks assisted by artificial intelligence were increasing. According to the prime minister, some key digital agencies can already repel attacks using AI, and he expects other state bodies to reach a similar level of readiness.
The comments came as Russia has increased strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Reuters reported that the wider campaign has also targeted logistics, businesses and data centres. Ukraine is trying to defend itself against ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones while facing a shortage of air-defense weapons.
Digital systems have become part of the wider conflict because disruptions can affect public services, businesses and military capabilities even when physical damage is limited. Koretskyi’s call for dedicated cyber teams suggests Kyiv is treating protection of networks and data facilities as an operational priority alongside the defense of power infrastructure.
Ukraine has also expanded strikes against parts of Russia’s energy industry and against e-commerce companies. Reuters reported that some of Kyiv’s defensive and battlefield capabilities had recently been affected by restrictions on its use of the U.S.-based Starshield satellite internet service. The report did not independently verify the Ukrainian prime minister’s claims about the data-centre attacks.
