Indonesia’s wildfire hotspots fall, but protests and haze keep pressure on government

Rain remains too uneven to end crisis

Indonesia recorded 565 high-confidence hotspots on Thursday, down from more than 1,200 a week earlier, but officials warned that the trend remains volatile. Fires have damaged air quality in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, while students in Kalimantan cities demonstrated over the government response. Authorities have mobilized more than 69,000 personnel and roughly 50 aircraft. An early, prolonged dry season and delayed rains continue to leave forests and peatlands vulnerable.
