Early iPhone Duo Owners Report Inner-Screen Damage; Hinge Cause Remains Unconfirmed

Some early iPhone Duo buyers are reporting damage to the foldable phone’s inner display, with accounts describing resistance at the hinge followed by a crack or pop. The reports raise a durability question soon after the device went on sale, but they do not establish a confirmed engineering defect or how many phones may be affected.

GSMArena’s October 25 report describes a recurring display pattern: a vertical line through the centre and a horizontal line extending into the right half. Several owners said the damage appeared during ordinary opening, rather than after a drop or deliberate pressure. Those descriptions remain owner accounts, not findings from an independent failure analysis.

One owner describes failure within six hours

In a Reddit post marked “Verified Claim” by the iPhone Duo community’s moderators, user Midnight_Slump said the phone had been owned for about six hours and opened fewer than 20 times. The owner described feeling something under the internal hinge, hearing a crack and then seeing damage along the hinge, without visible exterior damage.

The same account says Apple offered an express replacement involving a full-cost hold, and that an Apple Store replaced the handset that evening. That is one reported support experience; it should not be read as a universal replacement policy or a guarantee of immediate stock.

A suspected hinge issue is not a confirmed cause

The similarity of the resistance-before-crack accounts is why a hinge-related problem is being discussed. However, neither the material reviewed nor GSMArena’s report supplies a public Apple engineering finding establishing the root cause. A subreddit moderation label is useful context for an individual claim, but it is not an engineering assessment.

GSMArena says some owners experienced problems within hours and others after several days. It also reports replacement-stock constraints, particularly for 1TB and 2TB models. Those accounts do not reveal whether the issue is limited to a production batch, how frequently it occurs or whether apparently similar failures have the same cause.

What the reports do—and do not—show

The available evidence supports reporting that multiple owners have described early inner-screen failures and sought replacements. It does not support calling every iPhone Duo defective, calculating a failure rate from Reddit posts or saying Apple has acknowledged a specific design flaw.

Owners encountering abnormal resistance or display damage should document the condition and seek model-specific support from Apple or their seller. For prospective buyers, the unresolved questions are the cause, the number of affected units and whether Apple issues a public response. Availability and support arrangements can differ by market.
