Cloud AI company Modal plans to add Nvidia’s Vera CPU to a mixed fleet after tests showed it could double agent workloads.
Nvidia wins Modal as a new customer for Vera central processors
Nvidia has won CPU business at Modal, a cloud-computing startup that rents infrastructure to AI developers. Modal plans to use Nvidia’s new Vera central processor for AI-agent hosting after relying on Intel and AMD.
Modal said early tests showed Vera doubled the amount of work agents could complete. It will make deep software changes to support the chip, but CEO Erik Bernhardsson said Modal is not abandoning existing suppliers. Jobs will run on a mixed fleet according to performance.
Modal raised $750 million at a $15.75 billion valuation and said it is on track for $1 billion in sales over the next year. Service usage has tripled and revenue has grown more than 15 times year over year, it said.
The customer win matters as Nvidia enters a processor market dominated by Intel and AMD. Nvidia expects at least $20 billion in Vera sales this fiscal year and sees a roughly $200 billion market. Modal’s tests used currently available rival chips; newer models could narrow the gap.
