Iran Says Seven Tankers Were Hit in the Strait of Hormuz
What happened
Iran said seven commercial vessels were hit in and around the Strait of Hormuz, according to Al Jazeera’s live coverage on October 22. The report attributed the account to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which said its navy struck four ships involved in oil transfers in the Gulf.
The IRGC said three other vessels caught fire after hitting mines near the strategic waterway. It also threatened to expand confrontation to US bases in the region if Washington continued urging ships to use routes Tehran described as mined and illegal.
The claims came amid a wider confrontation involving Iran, the United States and regional actors. Hormuz is a critical energy chokepoint, so any sustained disruption could affect shipping, insurance and oil markets. However, Al Jazeera’s live coverage presented the seven-vessel account as an Iranian claim; it did not independently verify responsibility for the incidents or provide a separate assessment of damage.
That attribution matters. The reported sequence combines alleged direct strikes with vessels that Iran said were damaged by mines, and it does not by itself establish whether all seven incidents had the same cause. Further reporting from maritime authorities, ship operators or independent imagery would be needed to confirm the scale and circumstances.
