Apple's smallest smart speaker is quietly much more powerful inside. The HomePod mini 2 has 2GB of RAM — twice the original model — and a new S10 chip, even though Apple never mentions either figure in its official specifications.
MacRumors confirmed the memory on November 4, after a teardown revealed 2GB of SK Hynix RAM inside the new speaker. The original HomePod mini, launched in 2020, had just 1GB. Apple announced the HomePod mini 2 on October 13 and put it on sale on October 30 for $149.
Why the extra memory matters
The extra RAM and the S10 chip — the same processor used in the Apple Watch — are not about making music sound better today. They are about what the speaker will be able to do next. Apple has said Siri AI support is planned for the HomePod mini 2, but it is not available at launch, and the additional memory is likely there to run those on-device AI features when they arrive.
Apple rarely lists RAM in its product specifications, leaving the details to teardowns and supply-chain reports. The HomePod mini 2 is the latest example: on paper it looks like a modest refresh of a six-year-old speaker, but inside it has been rebuilt for the AI era.
Part of a quiet refresh
The HomePod mini 2 arrived alongside a wave of Apple announcements in October, including the touchscreen MacBook Pro, the OLED iPad mini and the M6 iMac. Unlike those products, it received no dedicated launch event — it was announced by press release — but its internal upgrades may matter more than its familiar design suggests.
