Apple says it will replace some iPhone Duo units with inner-display problems
Apple said it will replace affected units after acknowledging an issue with the inner display of a small number of iPhone Duo foldable phones. Reuters reported on October 26 that the company's statement came days after the first devices began shipping and after social-media posts showed cracks and lines near the central hinge.
Apple's replacement statement
“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” Apple said in the statement quoted by Reuters. The company advised users who experience display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not say what caused the failures, so the replacement offer should not be read as a confirmed explanation of the defect.
This is distinct from earlier owner reports and teardown-based discussion: it is Apple's own service response. Apple's general screen-support page says technicians inspect a device and determine the final service outcome, while AppleCare customers may be eligible for Express Replacement. Coverage can vary by plan, location and the condition of the device.
Hinge theory remains unconfirmed
iFixit separately used teardown footage, patents and CT scans to build a simulation of the Duo hinge. Reuters reported that iFixit found the reported damage clustered near a display cable and central support bar, and suggested the bar might create a stress hotspot when the phone folds. Apple had not commented on that analysis when Reuters published its report. It remains a technical hypothesis rather than an established finding by Apple.
Apple's product announcement describes iPhone Duo as a foldable device with a precision-engineered hinge and a multilayer inner display. Those design details explain why a hinge-area failure could matter, but they do not establish that the design caused the reported damage or show how widespread the issue is.
What owners should do
Owners seeing cracks, lines or other inner-screen failures should document the symptoms, avoid applying pressure to the fold and contact AppleCare or an Apple-authorized service provider. Apple's support page says its limited warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year, while accidental damage and service eligibility can be treated differently. A replacement is therefore a service decision for the individual device, not a blanket recall announcement.
The incident is an early durability test for Apple's first foldable iPhone. A prompt replacement policy may reduce immediate customer disruption, but the scale, cause and long-term remedy will require further evidence from Apple and from units returned for inspection.
