HONOR Play20C Makes Budget Phones More Interesting With a Touchscreen on the Back

HONOR Play20C Officially Arrives With a Touchscreen on the Back

HONOR has officially launched the Play20C, a budget smartphone that takes an unusual approach to the design of an entry-level phone. Instead of giving users only the conventional display on the front, HONOR has added a 2.01-inch touchscreen to the back, positioned beside the rear camera.

That small rear panel is the phone's defining feature. It is not simply a decorative display: HONOR says users can interact with it for functions including notifications, call alerts and media controls, while it can also act as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the main rear camera.

The Play20C is now listed on HONOR's global website, confirming that this is an official product rather than a concept or leaked device. The phone combines the unusual rear screen with a large 6,000mAh battery, a 6.78-inch display and a budget-oriented Unisoc processor.

The Rear Touchscreen Is the Real Highlight

The 2.01-inch secondary display is easily the most interesting part of the Play20C. HONOR lists a 240 × 296 resolution for the panel, which is obviously much smaller than the main screen, but its purpose is different.

Instead of opening the phone every time a user wants to check a basic notification or control media playback, the rear screen provides quick access to those functions. HONOR also promotes a one-tap selfie experience, allowing users to look at the rear display while taking photos with the main camera.

That could be particularly useful for people who prefer using the better rear camera for selfies. Rather than relying on the front-facing camera, the rear screen gives the user a way to frame the shot using the main camera.

HONOR's own product page specifically highlights the “Back Screen Touch Experience” and rear-camera selfie functionality as major features of the phone.

A Big 6.78-Inch Display on the Front

The main display is much more conventional. The Play20C features a 6.78-inch LCD panel with a 720 × 1576 resolution. HONOR lists support for refresh rates up to 120Hz on its global product page, while the specifications page notes that the actual refresh rate can vary depending on applications and usage scenarios.

The large screen gives the phone plenty of room for watching videos, browsing social media and using everyday applications. It is not an AMOLED or high-resolution flagship panel, but that is understandable considering the phone's budget positioning.

The interesting part is that HONOR has put considerably more attention into the overall two-screen experience than would normally be expected at this price level.

6,000mAh Battery Targets Long Usage

Battery life is another strong point of the Play20C. The smartphone carries a 6,000mAh battery, although HONOR specifies a rated capacity of 5,850mAh.

Charging is limited to 15W through USB Type-C. That means the battery is designed more around endurance than fast top-ups. A 6,000mAh cell can provide useful longevity, but the relatively modest charging speed means users should not expect flagship-style charging times.

For budget-phone buyers, however, battery capacity can often matter more than extremely fast charging. The Play20C appears to be designed for users who want to spend more time using the phone and less time looking for a charger.

13MP Camera, Not a Megapixel Race

The camera setup is deliberately simple. HONOR's official specifications list a 13MP rear camera with autofocus, accompanied by a single LED flash. The front camera is a 5MP fixed-focus sensor. Rear and front cameras support 1080p video recording.

That makes the rear touchscreen even more interesting because its usefulness is closely tied to the main camera. Users can turn the phone around, use the rear display as a small preview screen and capture selfies using the rear camera.

HONOR's global product page specifically describes the rear-display selfie experience, including tapping the rear screen to focus and capture an image.

This is not a camera-focused phone, though. Buyers looking for advanced photography features, multiple cameras or high-resolution video will need to look higher up HONOR's lineup.

Unisoc Processor Keeps the Phone in Budget Territory

The Play20C uses a Unisoc T610 or T615 processor depending on the configuration. HONOR specifies that the 4GB RAM + 128GB version gets the newer T615, while other storage configurations use the T610.

The processors are designed for basic smartphone workloads rather than demanding gaming or flagship-level multitasking. For messaging, social media, web browsing, video streaming and other everyday tasks, the hardware is aimed at keeping costs under control while providing adequate performance.

The phone runs Android 16 Go Edition, which is particularly relevant for an entry-level device because Google's Go edition is designed for smartphones with more limited hardware resources.

Storage options listed by HONOR include 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, depending on market and configuration. The phone also supports expandable storage through a card slot, with HONOR's global page advertising expansion of up to 1TB.

Design and Colors

The Play20C measures 168.3 × 78.5 × 8.72mm and weighs approximately 214 grams including the battery. Its size reflects the combination of the large front display and 6,000mAh battery.

HONOR is offering the phone in Forest Green, Sunrise Gold and Midnight Black. The Sunrise Gold finish gives the Play20C a slightly more distinctive appearance than the usual black-and-green budget-phone choices.

The rear touchscreen is positioned beside the camera module, creating a design that immediately separates the Play20C from most conventional entry-level Android phones.

HONOR Play20C Price and Availability

The HONOR Play20C has appeared in Nigeria at a starting price of NGN 149,900 for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version, equivalent to roughly $113 based on the reported launch pricing. Other configurations may carry different prices.

HONOR has listed the Play20C on its global website, but official Bangladesh pricing and local availability have not been confirmed in the information currently available. That means the Nigerian price should not be treated as the Bangladesh retail price.

Pricing can also vary significantly between markets because of taxes, distribution costs, official warranty arrangements and storage configuration.

Is the Rear Screen Actually Useful?

The rear touchscreen is more than a marketing gimmick, but its usefulness will depend heavily on how HONOR supports it through software.

For quick notifications and media controls, the idea makes sense. The selfie viewfinder is arguably even more useful because it gives users access to the rear camera while still being able to see how the photograph is framed.

At the same time, a 2-inch rear display is never going to replace the main screen. Its value comes from offering quick interactions without turning the phone around, rather than trying to create a second full smartphone interface.

That makes the Play20C an interesting example of a feature that has traditionally appeared on more expensive phones being brought into a much cheaper segment.

Verdict: An Unusual Budget Phone With a Clear Identity

The HONOR Play20C is not trying to win the budget-phone race through raw specifications. Its processor and cameras are firmly positioned in the entry-level category, and the 15W charging system is relatively conservative.

What makes the phone interesting is the combination of a rear touchscreen, large 6,000mAh battery and big 6.78-inch display. HONOR has given an inexpensive phone a feature that immediately makes it recognizable.

For buyers who simply want the fastest processor or best camera in the price range, there are likely more conventional options. But for someone looking for something different—especially a phone that can use its rear display for notifications, media controls and rear-camera selfies—the Play20C stands out.

The bigger story here is that secondary displays are no longer being reserved exclusively for expensive smartphones. HONOR is bringing the concept into the budget segment, and the Play20C could be an early sign that unusual hardware features are beginning to trickle down into cheaper phones.
