OpenAI Reportedly Plans to Buy Google AI Chips in Compute Push
OpenAI plans to buy Google's artificial-intelligence chips, Reuters reported, citing a report by The Information based on one person familiar with the matter. The financial terms and other details were not disclosed.
The report describes a plan, not a completed transaction. Google did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment outside regular business hours, while OpenAI declined to comment.
A purchase would differ from rented computing capacity
OpenAI already has experience using Google's processors. Reuters reported in June 2025 that the ChatGPT maker had begun renting Google's AI chips. A hardware purchase would be a different arrangement from renting access to computing capacity.
The proposed purchase is also separate from OpenAI's announcement last week that its frontier AI models would become available through Google Cloud. Making models available through a cloud platform does not, by itself, establish that OpenAI is buying the platform provider's processors.
More options alongside Nvidia and Broadcom
OpenAI is already among the largest buyers of Nvidia graphics processing units, which it uses to train and deploy AI models. Google's Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, have gained traction as an alternative to Nvidia's market-leading chips. Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year, Reuters reported.
Alphabet finance chief Anat Ashkenazi previously said a small percentage of revenue from TPU sales agreements would begin to be recognised by the end of 2026, with the vast majority expected to be recognised in 2027. That timetable concerns revenue from those agreements, not the share of Alphabet's overall revenue coming from TPUs.
OpenAI also unveiled its first custom AI chip designed with Broadcom in June and said it planned to deploy the processor by the end of this year as part of a multigeneration programme, Reuters reported.
Key details remain undisclosed
The reported Google-chip plan does not establish how many processors OpenAI would buy, which TPU generation would be involved, where the hardware would be deployed or whether the purchase will be completed. Those details would determine the scale of any shift in OpenAI's computing supply.
