Dropbox plans 9% workforce cut as technology chief prepares to leave

Dropbox plans to reduce its global workforce by about 9% as it redirects investment toward its core product and growth priorities. The cloud-storage company disclosed the restructuring in a regulatory filing reported by Reuters on October 28.

Workforce reduction brings $27 million to $33 million in costs

The company expects the cuts to generate between $27 million and $33 million in expenses, largely for severance and related payments. Most of the charge is expected in the fourth quarter, with the remaining amount projected for 2027.

Dropbox reported 2,113 full-time employees as of December 31. The Reuters report did not specify how the planned reduction would be divided among countries or teams.

Technology chief Ali Dasdan to leave

Chief Technology Officer Ali Dasdan is also due to leave his role effective November 18, according to the filing. The leadership change accompanies the company’s effort to align its organization and spending with its product strategy.

Dropbox has already changed its top executive this year. Co-founder and chief executive Andrew Houston stepped down in May, and the company promoted insider Ashraf Alkarmi to succeed him.

Third-quarter performance expected to meet or exceed guidance

Alongside the workforce announcement, Dropbox said its third-quarter performance was expected to be in line with or above its previous guidance for revenue and adjusted operating margin. The report did not provide a new numerical forecast.

The announcement therefore combines an organizational reduction with an unchanged-or-better assessment of the quarter against the company’s existing targets.
