Itaú Agrees to Buy AI Startup NeoSpace for 2.925 Billion Reais
Brazilian lender Itaú Unibanco has agreed to acquire all issued shares of artificial-intelligence startup NeoSpace AI in a transaction valued at 2.925 billion reais, or about $589 million, according to a securities filing cited by Reuters.
Deal terms
The consideration will be split between an amount payable at closing and a deferred balance payable over five years, Reuters reported. The transaction is not complete: it remains subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
Itaú’s investor-relations page lists a “Fato Relevante” concerning the acquisition of all shares issued by Neospace. That official page confirms the existence of the relevant disclosure, while the Reuters report supplies the reported value, payment structure and conditions.
Why NeoSpace matters
NeoSpace specialises in large AI models and has worked with Itaú for nearly two years, Reuters reported. The acquisition would bring a technology company that already has a working relationship with the bank into the lender’s ownership, if the transaction receives the required approvals and closes.
The sources do not say that the deal has closed, that NeoSpace’s products will immediately replace bank employees, or that all Itaú services will become AI-operated. The disclosed transaction is a corporate acquisition and a strategic technology bet, not proof of a completed operational rollout.
A bank-owned AI strategy
Buying an AI specialist can give a bank more control over model development, data workflows and integration than relying only on outside vendors. It can also create execution, governance and regulatory challenges. Neither the Reuters report nor the opened Itaú investor-relations page provides a detailed integration plan, model-performance targets or a timetable for customer-facing changes.
The deferred payment structure also means the headline value should not be read as all-cash funding on the closing date. Final economics may depend on the transaction’s conditions and payment schedule.
For Itaú, the immediate milestone is regulatory review and closing. For the wider banking sector, the deal is another signal that lenders are treating specialised AI capability as a strategic asset, while still having to demonstrate control, security and useful outcomes.
