Anthropic IPO filing shows explosive growth alongside an $80.7 billion net loss

Anthropic's preliminary IPO filing shows rapid revenue growth, a sharply wider reported net loss driven largely by non-operating valuation changes, and a much smaller operating loss. The filing also warns about security, infrastructure and execution risks.

Anthropic IPO filing shows explosive growth alongside an $80.7 billion net loss

Anthropic has moved closer to a public listing with a preliminary registration statement that pairs exceptionally fast revenue growth with very large reported losses and detailed warnings about the risks of developing advanced AI systems.

Large reported loss, narrower operating deficit

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Anthropic reported revenue of $16.286 billion, compared with $1.163 billion in the same period a year earlier, according to its Form S-1 filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Reuters reported that revenue grew 1,368% in the three months ended June 30 from a year earlier and that the company cautioned its growth rate could decline or fluctuate.

The filing records a net loss of $80.748 billion for the first half. That figure should not be read as the company's operating loss: Anthropic reported an operating loss of $693 million. The largest component of the non-operating result was a $72.388 billion loss from changes in the fair value of convertible notes, derivative liabilities and SAFEs. Reuters described the huge net loss as largely related to bonds convertible into the company's shares. Adjusted operating income was positive at $1.62 billion, Reuters said, compared with a $1.85 billion loss a year earlier.

Compute commitments and customer base

Anthropic's S-1 shows $8.945 billion in compute and infrastructure expense for the first half, the largest operating-expense category. Reuters also reported that the company has committed more than $600 billion to computing deals with partners including Amazon and Google. The filing warns that revenue is primarily consumption-based while compute commitments generally extend over multiple years, creating a risk if revenue growth fails to keep pace with payment obligations.

Reuters reported that more than half of Fortune 500 companies and over 30% of Global 2000 firms were customers generating at least $100,000 each in revenue for Anthropic over the 12 months ended September 30.

Safety and listing plans

The prospectus describes possible misuse and security threats. It says advanced systems could produce outputs interpreted as coercive, deceptive or manipulative, and reports controlled tests involving code sabotage, fraud assistance and information manipulation. Anthropic also says faster internal AI-assisted research could outpace its ability to develop and validate safety and security measures.

Reuters reported that the company is expected to go public before Thanksgiving, without terms for the offering yet disclosed. The filing identifies Nasdaq as the intended market and “ANT” as the proposed ticker after the IPO closes. Those are proposed listing details, not evidence that the offering has completed.
