WhatsApp Now Suggests Your Latest Photos and Videos Right in Your Chats
WhatsApp is making it one tap easier to share the photo you just took. The app has started rolling out media suggestions, a small new shortcut that offers to send your most recent photo or video the moment you open a chat.
It builds on something WhatsApp already does: on Android, the app suggests stickers above the keyboard based on the emojis you type. Now the same idea extends to your gallery.
How the suggestions appear
There are two ways the feature can show up, and you will only ever see one of them. In the first, a small pop-up appears above the chat bar as soon as you open a conversation, showing a thumbnail of your latest photo or video and asking if you want to send it. In the second, the camera icon in the chat bar is temporarily replaced by that same thumbnail.
Either way, you can simply ignore it and keep chatting — the pop-up also has a close button.
No accidental sends
Tapping the suggestion does not send anything straight away. Instead, it opens the drawing editor, where you can look at the photo or video, add a caption or a sticker, and then decide. You can also back out without sending anything, which should stop the feature causing accidental shares if you tap it by mistake.
WhatsApp does not filter what it suggests by type or source. It simply picks the most recent item in your gallery — a photo you took, a screenshot, an image saved from the web, or a video from another app.
Rolling out now, and how to turn it off
Media suggestions are rolling out to some users on both Android and iOS with the latest versions of the app. The rollout is gradual, so more accounts should get it over the coming weeks, though it is still unclear when it will reach everyone.
The feature switches itself on once it reaches your account. If you would rather not see these suggestions, you can turn them off in Settings, under Chats, by switching off "Recent media suggestions".
