OpenAI Could Be Ready for a 2027 IPO as Enterprise Sales Pass Consumers
OpenAI President Greg Brockman said on Wednesday the company now generates the majority of its revenue from enterprise sales and he believes it will be ready to go public in 2027.
Brockman said the AI lab has been ramping up sales to businesses in competition with rival Anthropic, which is likely to go public before year end, including pushing its Codex agent.
The AI executive spoke at a Wall Street Journal tech conference in Napa, California. When asked on stage if OpenAI will be ready for an IPO next year, he said, "I think so."
San Francisco's OpenAI has been racing to ramp up fundraising, Reuters reported, in order to capitalize on its recent growth after delaying its IPO plans.
A shift in the revenue mix
The change marks a clear shift in OpenAI's business. In March 2026, the company said enterprise sales accounted for more than 40% of its revenue and were on track to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026, while the business overall was generating $2 billion in revenue per month.
Brockman's latest description moves beyond that target: enterprise has gone from a business expected to catch up with consumer revenue to the larger contributor before the year is over.
OpenAI's enterprise push includes promoting Codex, its coding agent, as it competes with Anthropic for business customers. Anthropic's own IPO timing has been in doubt in recent days, with potential investors questioning whether the company can hold its planned roadshow in time for a November listing.
IPO filing already on the table
On June 8, OpenAI said it had submitted a confidential draft S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission and had not decided when to go public. The company said the confidential filing could give it the option to go public sooner, while some objectives might be easier to pursue as a private company.
Brockman's remarks did not establish a listing date, an offering price or an exact enterprise revenue share. His answer expressed confidence about readiness without committing OpenAI to a 2027 listing.
