Tech Wreckage Now Hinges on Anthropic's IPO

Technology shares led a market tumble on November 5, as the Nasdaq Composite Index fell as much as 5%, its largest one-day decline in more than a year.

Nvidia's stock price dropped as much as 9%, while the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index declined more than 10%.

A 5% fall, if sustained, would result in about a $2 trillion decline in market value for the Nasdaq 100 Index.

For the broader market, the stakes are now tied to Anthropic's listing. Reuters previously reported that potential investors doubt Anthropic can hold its planned IPO roadshow next week in time for a November listing, with some viewing the discussed $1.5 trillion valuation as high end, and that Anthropic may need a bigger discount given quarterly losses and large AI-buildout commitments. The tech rout has made that listing — and what it says about investor appetite for AI — the next test for the sector.
