US stock futures pare losses after inflation, growth data

U.S. stock-index futures pared earlier losses on Thursday as investors assessed September inflation data released a day after the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged.

Futures remain lower

At 8:32 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were down 146 points, or 0.28%, while S&P 500 E-minis fell 27.5 points, or 0.35%. Nasdaq 100 E-minis declined 346.5 points, or 1.16%, according to Reuters.

Economic data in focus

The Commerce Department’s personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.5% in September from the previous month and 3.6% from a year earlier. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.3% monthly and 3.1% annually. Each reading was in line with economists’ expectations cited by Reuters.

A separate advance estimate showed the U.S. economy grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter, above the 3.2% forecast. Initial jobless claims for the week ended Oct. 24 came in at 194,000, compared with the 199,000 estimate.

Investors were weighing the figures against the Fed’s decision on Wednesday to keep its policy rate unchanged, with the data offering fresh clues about inflation and economic momentum.
