Qualcomm Shares Rise as MediaTek Takes the Lead in the 2nm Chip Race
Qualcomm shares climbed more than 3% even as MediaTek unveiled its new Dimensity 9600 Pro, becoming the first of the two rivals to officially introduce a smartphone chip built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process.
Qualcomm Stock Rises Despite a New 2nm Challenge
Qualcomm is facing a fresh challenge in the premium smartphone chip market, but investors did not appear particularly worried. Qualcomm shares climbed about 3.1% on Tuesday, even as rival MediaTek unveiled its new Dimensity 9600 Pro, a flagship processor built using TSMC’s latest 2nm manufacturing technology. The move puts MediaTek ahead of Qualcomm in officially announcing a 2nm smartphone chipset, adding another layer to an increasingly competitive flagship chip race.
MediaTek Fires the First 2nm Shot
MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro is the company's first smartphone processor manufactured using TSMC's 2nm technology. The company says its new chip delivers a 51% improvement in initial generative-AI prompt processing compared with the previous generation, highlighting how much of the current chip battle is now focused on on-device artificial intelligence rather than traditional CPU performance alone. MediaTek is also positioning the processor as a way to expand its presence in the premium smartphone segment, where Qualcomm has historically held a strong position.
The timing is particularly interesting because Qualcomm is preparing its own next-generation flagship Snapdragon platform. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to be introduced during Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 22–24, with the company expected to move its flagship mobile platform to the 2nm generation as well. In other words, MediaTek may have revealed its 2nm hardware first, but Qualcomm's response is arriving only days later.
Why Qualcomm Investors Are Still Buying
The market reaction suggests investors are looking beyond the immediate smartphone-chip rivalry. Qualcomm's business is much broader than its Snapdragon smartphone processors, with the company also expanding into automotive, PCs, IoT, edge computing and AI infrastructure. Qualcomm has been emphasizing its strategy of bringing AI capabilities across a wider range of devices and computing markets, reducing its dependence on the traditional smartphone business.
That broader strategy helps explain why MediaTek reaching 2nm first has not automatically translated into a negative reaction for Qualcomm. The more important question is how the two chips perform in real devices once they reach consumers. Manufacturing technology is important, but efficiency, sustained performance, AI capability, modem technology, software optimization, heat management and power consumption will all influence the final user experience.
The 2nm Smartphone Battle Is Just Beginning
The timing could make September one of the most important months for flagship smartphone silicon in years. Apple has already entered the 2nm era with its latest generation of smartphone chips, while MediaTek has now officially announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro. Qualcomm is preparing its own 2nm Snapdragon platform, creating a three-way race around the next generation of mobile processors.
For consumers, the real battle will begin when these processors appear inside commercial smartphones. MediaTek has already confirmed upcoming devices from major manufacturers, while Qualcomm's next Snapdragon platform is expected to power a new generation of premium Android phones. The question is no longer whether 2nm chips are coming to smartphones—it is which chipmaker can turn the new manufacturing process into the best combination of performance, battery life and AI capability.
Qualcomm's 3% rise therefore tells only part of the story. MediaTek may have fired the first shot in the 2nm race, but Qualcomm has yet to show its full response. With the Snapdragon Summit just days away, the competition between Snapdragon and Dimensity is about to enter a much more interesting phase.
