MLB WILD CARD SERIES ERUPTS AS BRAVES AND YANKEES TAKE CONTROL

The 2026 Major League Baseball postseason has opened with two heavyweight matchups producing very different stories. The Atlanta Braves came from behind to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3, while the New York Yankees overwhelmed the Boston Red Sox 9-0 in their respective Wild Card Series openers.

For a while, it appeared Philadelphia had successfully turned the game around. But Atlanta's offense responded when the pressure was at its highest.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Austin Riley launched a three-run home run, completing a five-run turnaround and giving the Braves a 5-3 lead they would not surrender.

Riley's eighth-inning home run became the defining play of the Braves-Phillies opener.

Philadelphia reliever Jhoan Duran had retired the first five batters he faced before Atlanta's decisive rally. The Braves took advantage of the opportunity, turning what had been a one-run deficit into a two-run advantage almost instantly.

Dylan Lee handled the eighth inning for Atlanta before Raisel Iglesias closed out the ninth to earn the save.

The victory gave Atlanta a 1-0 series lead, putting the Braves in position to eliminate Philadelphia with another win.

PHILLIES NOW FACE ELIMINATION

The Phillies entered the postseason as one of the National League's established contenders, but the opening loss immediately increased the pressure surrounding the series.

Because the Wild Card round is played as a best-of-three series, Philadelphia cannot afford another defeat. A Game 2 victory would level the series and send the teams into a decisive Game 3.

The American League Wild Card opener between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox was far less competitive.

New York defeated Boston 9-0, taking a 1-0 series lead behind a brilliant postseason performance from rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler and a spectacular offensive night from Ben Rice.

Schlittler struck out 10 batters over 6⅓ innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. He threw 117 pitches, producing one of the most impressive postseason starts of his young career.

Boston struggled to generate sustained offense against the Yankees right-hander, while New York gradually built an advantage before turning the game into a rout late.

BEN RICE PUTS ON A POSTSEASON SHOW

If Schlittler controlled the game from the mound, Ben Rice controlled it from the batter's box.

Rice went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs, including a grand slam during New York's five-run eighth inning.

His first home run was a solo shot that extended New York's advantage. Later, Rice delivered the biggest blow of the night with the grand slam, putting the game completely out of reach.

His four-hit performance was particularly notable because it became the Yankees' first four-hit postseason game since Gleyber Torres accomplished the feat in the 2020 Wild Card Series.

YANKEES TAKE A 1-0 LEAD OVER BOSTON

The Yankees' victory puts Boston in a situation similar to Philadelphia's.

The Red Sox must win Game 2 to force a decisive third game. Another Yankees victory would end Boston's postseason run and send New York into the American League Division Series.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. Sonny Gray is listed for Boston against Max Fried for New York, according to the published Wild Card schedule.

The opening round has demonstrated exactly why the Wild Card Series can be so unforgiving. A single bad inning can completely change the direction of a postseason game, as Philadelphia discovered when Riley's three-run homer transformed Atlanta's deficit into a lead.
