Binance says it has replenished 90% of stolen assets
Binance said on Saturday that it had replenished or covered 90% of the assets affected by its record $6.3 billion security incident, marking a new milestone in the cryptocurrency exchange’s effort to replace missing customer holdings.
Replenishment is not recovery from attackers
The update describes Binance replacing the affected assets, rather than recovering the stolen tokens from those responsible. The exchange said it was continuing to purchase outstanding assets through market and over-the-counter channels and would absorb the financial impact rather than pass it to users.
According to Binance, the replenishment used a portion of its $1 billion Secure Asset Fund for Users, part of its futures insurance fund and its corporate treasury. The exchange said it plans to restore SAFU to approximately $1 billion. It had previously said that more than $6.34 billion in company funds had been set aside to cover the losses.
Less-liquid tokens account for the remaining gap
Binance said the remaining 10% involved less-liquid tokens that may take longer to source in the required amounts. It identified bitcoin, ether, Tether, BNB, Solana, USD Coin, XRP, USD1, RLUSD and Zcash as the 10 assets it said were fully backed.
Those statements are the company’s account of its replenishment progress. Covering missing balances with replacement assets is separate from establishing how the incident occurred or retrieving the original stolen holdings.
Proof-of-reserves check and withdrawal plan
The exchange said it had taken a new proof-of-reserves snapshot at 0000 GMT on October 31. It said holders of the 10 named tokens would be able to verify minimum 1:1 backing once the full zero-knowledge proof was generated, a process it estimated would take 40 to 50 hours.
Binance also said withdrawals remained on track to resume on November 1, within its previously announced timeframe. The replenishment announcement does not itself establish that withdrawals have already reopened.
