Google Gemini can now edit generated files without leaving the chat
Google has added in-chat previewing and editing to the Gemini app, reducing the need to download a generated file just to change a few lines. The update covers documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, text files and code, although mobile support is narrower than the desktop experience.
Edit directly or ask for a targeted revision
A generated file can be expanded into a full-screen workspace, where users can type changes themselves. They can also highlight a passage to ask Gemini a question or request revisions to text and visual elements. The file, original prompt and follow-up instructions remain part of the same conversation.
Google’s demonstration starts with uploaded handwritten lecture notes and turns them into a PDF study guide. The user can then edit the result manually, select a section for changes or ask questions about the document. It is a more direct revision process than repeatedly exporting a file and reopening it in another app.
PDFs work on mobile, but other formats are web-only
PDF previewing and editing are supported on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT files and code are supported on the web only for now.
That distinction matters if a user starts work on a phone. The announcement does not extend the complete desktop editing toolset to every file format on mobile.
Available across supported Gemini languages
Google says the capabilities are available to all users in every language in which the Gemini app is available. The announcement does not specify a separate paid-plan requirement for these editing tools.
The update makes Gemini more useful for the back-and-forth work that follows an initial draft. It does not make generated documents or code automatically reliable: factual claims, calculations and executable code still need to be checked before the finished file is used.
