Huawei Is Going Big on Cameras Again

Huawei's next Mate flagship is beginning to look less like a routine smartphone upgrade and more like another serious attempt to push mobile photography forward. Fresh leaks suggest the Mate 90 Pro Max could arrive with a powerful camera system centered around a huge 200MP periscope telephoto sensor, while Huawei is also reportedly preparing a large main camera sensor with advanced color and aperture technology. None of these specifications have been officially confirmed by Huawei yet, but the latest reports are giving the Mate 90 Pro Max a very interesting camera story ahead of its expected late-September launch.

The 200MP Periscope Is the Headliner

The most eye-catching part of the leak is the rumored 200MP telephoto camera. According to recent reports, Huawei could use SmartSens' SCC85XS sensor, measuring approximately 1/1.28 inch. If the information is accurate, this would reportedly be SmartSens' first high-end 200MP image sensor developed through a fully domestic design and production process. The camera is also rumored to support around 4x lossless zoom, while Huawei's computational photography could handle additional levels of magnification.

The interesting thing here is that Huawei doesn't appear to be chasing the 200MP number simply for marketing. A large sensor combined with a high pixel count can give the phone more information to work with when producing zoomed images, especially when computational photography combines multiple frames. That could make the Mate 90 Pro Max particularly interesting for people who enjoy photographing distant subjects, buildings, landscapes or details that are difficult to capture with a conventional smartphone camera.

A 50MP Main Camera With RYYB and Variable Aperture

The main camera could be just as important. Another leak suggests the Mate 90 Pro Max may feature a 50MP main sensor measuring 1/1.28 inch, combined with RYYB color technology, a variable aperture and anti-glare technology. Huawei is also expected to introduce a newer generation of its Red Maple color imaging system.

The variable-aperture part is particularly interesting because it gives the camera more control over how much light reaches the sensor. Huawei May Have Another Trick: An External Lens

The combination matters because computational photography is becoming increasingly dependent on powerful processing. Capturing a photograph is only the first step.
