How to Make Your Smartphone Battery Last Longer: 12 Tips That Actually Work

Your phone's battery does not have to die before dinner. These 12 practical tips — from screen settings to charging habits — will help any Android phone or iPhone last noticeably longer every day.

Phone batteries have grown a lot — many new phones now ship with 6,000mAh or even 7,000mAh batteries — but screens are bigger and brighter, apps are hungrier, and 5G uses more power than Wi-Fi. The good news is that most battery drain comes from a handful of settings you can change in minutes.

1. Turn down the brightness

The screen is almost always the biggest battery drain on a phone. Turn off auto-brightness if it keeps the screen too bright, and set brightness manually to the lowest level that is still comfortable. On phones with OLED or AMOLED screens, dark mode saves real power, because black pixels on an OLED panel are switched off entirely.

2. Use battery saver mode

Both Android and iPhone have a built-in battery saver (Low Power Mode on iPhone). It limits background activity, reduces visual effects and lowers performance slightly. Turn it on when you know you will be away from a charger for a long time — it can easily add hours.

3. Find the apps eating your battery

Go to Settings, then Battery, and look at which apps used the most power in the last 24 hours. Social media, video and navigation apps are the usual suspects. If an app you barely use is near the top, restrict its background activity or uninstall it.

4. Stop apps running in the background

On Android, turn off "background data" and "background activity" for apps that do not need to refresh constantly. On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then Background App Refresh, and switch it off for apps you do not need updated in real time.

5. Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data

Mobile data — especially 5G — uses more power than Wi-Fi, and a weak signal drains the battery even faster because the phone keeps boosting its radio to stay connected. When you are indoors with Wi-Fi available, use it. If you are in an area with very poor signal, switching on airplane mode saves a surprising amount of battery.

6. Turn off location when you do not need it

GPS is another heavy drain. Set location access to "While Using the App" instead of "Always" for most apps, and turn location off entirely when you are not navigating or using maps.

7. Shorten the screen timeout

Set your screen to turn off after 30 seconds of inactivity instead of two minutes. It sounds small, but every minute the screen stays on while the phone sits on a table adds up over a day.

8. Turn off always-on display and haptics

Always-on display looks great, but it keeps part of the screen lit all day. If battery matters more than the clock on your lock screen, switch it off. Vibration and haptic feedback also use power — reducing them helps a little.

9. Keep your phone cool

Heat is the enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Do not leave your phone in direct sunlight, in a hot car, or under your pillow while charging. A hot battery drains faster and loses capacity permanently over time.

10. Charge between 20% and 80% when you can

You do not need to follow this rule every day, but lithium-ion batteries last longest when they are not regularly pushed to 0% or kept at 100% for hours. Most phones now have an "optimized charging" or "adaptive charging" feature that slows charging overnight — turn it on. Avoid cheap, uncertified chargers, which can damage the battery.

11. Update your software

Software updates often include battery optimizations and fix bugs that cause drain. If your battery life suddenly got worse, check whether an update is available — or whether a recently updated app is the culprit.

12. Replace the battery instead of the phone

If your phone is two or three years old and the battery barely lasts half a day, the battery itself is probably worn out. On iPhone, check Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health — if maximum capacity is below 80%, a new battery will make the phone feel new again for a fraction of the cost of a replacement phone.
