Airbnb Is Building an AI Travel Agent That Designs Its Own Interface

Airbnb is building an AI travel agent that designs its own interface in real time, CEO Brian Chesky said during the company's third-quarter earnings call.

The plan is to create "a much more personalized app experience" — an agent that, when a user asks it to plan a trip, builds an interface tailored to that person, their plans, their needs, their preferences and their history, interactive, and able to help plan the whole trip.

A platform beyond apps and websites

Chesky described the agent as a possible new platform beyond apps and websites, where the interface is no longer fixed and the agent builds the interface dynamically as it talks to the user. He used "agent" as a verb, saying: "This is what we're going to be agenting."

Chesky said Airbnb is going to be one of the first agent-first apps, and that the company plans to release one early next year. The agent-first app has not been built yet, so it is unclear whether it will be released or announced early next year.

Booking a trip from start to finish

Next year Airbnb will begin rolling out an AI travel agent that can book hotels and make restaurant reservations, beyond Airbnb's own listings. That is the big promise of the agent: booking a trip from start to finish.

Chesky said that over time an Airbnb AI agent could support other travel services, like hotels and restaurant reservations, because Airbnb wants to be the user's travel companion and concierge everywhere they go.

Beyond the core rental business

The move comes as Airbnb continues to move beyond its core rental business, with recent diversification into services — personal chefs, photographers and trainers — and experiences — gallery tours and pottery workshops.

Airbnb now claims 2 million services and experiences listings, roughly the size of its entire homes catalog in 2010. "We are still only getting started," Chesky said.

Analysts believe this represents a shift in the industry, and Airbnb plans to offer access to some 2 million listings in its services catalog via the AI agent.
