Google Maps Update Makes the App Fully iPhone Duo Compatible
Google Maps is now fully compatible with the iPhone Duo. Version 26.44.4 of the app adds full support for Apple's foldable phone, filling both of its displays properly for the first time.
The iPhone Duo has been shipping for a little while, but plenty of iOS apps still have not been adapted to its two displays. Google Maps is no longer one of them.
What was wrong before
Before this update, Google Maps was slightly offset to the left on the outer screen to make room for the new iOS dock position. On the inner screen, users got the regular iPhone app, which could be moved to the left or right but left most of the display empty.
What the update changes
Google Maps now fills both screens. On the outer screen, the change is mostly cosmetic, though the app looks neater. On the inside, the app now has a wide layout, with the menus and search box on the left and the map or satellite view stretching corner to corner. That makes it a lot like Google Maps on the iPad.
Street View also benefits from the extra width. By default, it takes up the left side of the inner screen and leaves the right side for the map. There does not appear to be a way to swap the two, but users can make Street View fill the whole screen. If the iPhone Duo is closed while in Street View, it moves to the outer screen, and a close button takes the user back to the map.
Release notes say little
Google's App Store release notes for the update only mention bug fixes, so users would not know about the iPhone Duo support from the notes alone. Anyone who already uses Google Maps on the iPhone Duo will notice the difference right away.
