AI Agents Can Handle the Boring Configuration Work

The new system is based on Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows AI models to connect with external tools and services. According to TechCrunch, developers can connect AI coding agents including Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform through Meta's MCP server. This means an AI agent can take care of certain setup and configuration tasks while the developer focuses on the actual application or customer experience.

The idea fits into a broader shift in software development: AI is moving beyond generating code and starting to interact directly with the systems that developers use. Instead of asking an AI to explain how to configure a WhatsApp Business integration and then doing everything manually, developers can increasingly give the agent a task and let it operate the connected tools.

WhatsApp Is Becoming More AI-Centric

This move also comes as Meta expands AI throughout its business ecosystem. WhatsApp already offers Meta Business Agent, an AI system designed to help businesses answer customer questions and qualify leads. Meta says the service is available globally through WhatsApp.

The new MCP integration is different from a customer-facing chatbot.
