Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Gain Weight as Samsung Reportedly Prepares a Bigger Battery
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra is reportedly set to weigh 218 grams, making it 4 grams heavier than the current Galaxy S26 Ultra. A new leak also claims the phone will retain the 7.9mm thickness of its predecessor, while other reports point to a substantially larger battery as a possible reason for the added weight.
Galaxy S27 Ultra May Be Heavier, but Samsung Could Have a Bigger Battery in Mind
Samsung appears to be preparing a small but interesting change for its next Ultra flagship. According to a new leak, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could weigh 218 grams, which would make it 4 grams heavier than the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The same leak claims that Samsung will keep the phone at 7.9mm thick, meaning the additional weight may come without making the device physically thicker.
The information comes from well-known Samsung tipster Ice Universe, who posted the figures on September 30: 7.9mm thickness and 218 grams. The figures have since been reported by several Samsung-focused publications, although they remain unofficial at this stage. Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 Ultra or confirmed these dimensions.
From 233 Grams to 214 Grams — and Now Possibly 218
The rumored weight is particularly interesting because Samsung has spent the past two generations making the Ultra model lighter.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra weighed 233 grams, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra dropped to 218 grams. Samsung then reduced the Galaxy S26 Ultra further to 214 grams, according to Samsung's official specifications. The S26 Ultra also measures 7.9mm thick.
If the latest S27 Ultra leak is accurate, Samsung would therefore be reversing part of that weight reduction. At 218 grams, the S27 Ultra would weigh exactly as much as the S25 Ultra and four grams more than the S26 Ultra.
That is a very small difference in practical terms. The more important point is why Samsung may be adding those four grams.
A Much Bigger Battery Could Explain the Extra Weight
Several recent reports have suggested that Samsung could finally increase the battery capacity of the Ultra model significantly. The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, while leaks surrounding the S27 Ultra have pointed toward a battery of around 5,700mAh.
If that battery information proves accurate, the increase would be substantial. It would represent roughly a 14 percent increase in capacity compared with the S26 Ultra.
Samsung would therefore be attempting something technically interesting: adding considerably more battery capacity while keeping the overall phone at the same 7.9mm thickness and only slightly increasing its weight.
There is no official confirmation that the rumored battery and rumored weight are directly connected, so the relationship should still be treated as speculation. However, the timing of the leaks makes a larger battery one possible explanation for the additional weight.
The Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Keep the Same 7.9mm Body
The thickness figure is arguably just as interesting as the weight.
According to the leak, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will remain 7.9mm thick, excluding the camera protrusion. That is identical to the official thickness of the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Keeping the same thickness while increasing battery capacity would suggest Samsung is working on battery density and internal component efficiency rather than simply making the phone larger.
A silicon-based battery technology or other improvements in battery packaging could potentially help Samsung achieve greater capacity within a similar physical footprint, although Samsung has not confirmed what battery technology the S27 Ultra will use.
The Weight Difference Should Be Difficult to Notice
For someone moving from a Galaxy S26 Ultra to an S27 Ultra, a four-gram difference would probably be difficult to notice on its own.
The S26 Ultra weighs 214 grams, while the rumored S27 Ultra figure is 218 grams. That represents an increase of less than two percent.
In other words, the headline that the S27 Ultra is "heavier" is technically correct, but the change is extremely small. The more meaningful question is whether Samsung uses those extra grams to deliver something valuable elsewhere—particularly additional battery capacity.
If the rumored 5,700mAh battery becomes reality, the extra weight could represent a deliberate trade-off for longer endurance rather than a regression in Samsung's design strategy.
Camera Changes Could Also Make the S27 Ultra Different
Weight is not expected to be the only hardware change.
Recent leaks suggest Samsung could modify the S27 Ultra's camera system, including a possible change to the telephoto arrangement. One report claims the company may remove the dedicated 10MP 3x telephoto camera and instead rely on a 50MP 5x telephoto camera, while another leak points toward a new 200MP main sensor. These details remain unconfirmed.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra currently uses a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide camera and 50MP telephoto camera, alongside another telephoto system. Samsung's official specifications confirm the S26 Ultra's 200MP wide and 50MP telephoto hardware.
If Samsung changes the camera arrangement, the S27 Ultra could therefore have a noticeably different photographic strategy even if its overall exterior dimensions remain close to the S26 Ultra.
What About Performance and Software?
The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to arrive with a next-generation Qualcomm flagship processor, with some reports referring to it as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or a related high-end Snapdragon platform. Android 17 and a new generation of Samsung's One UI software are also expected.
However, these details are still based largely on leaks and early reports. Samsung has not officially announced the S27 series, so processor branding, memory configurations, software features and other specifications can still change before launch.
The same applies to the rumored battery capacity and camera configuration.
Galaxy S27 Ultra vs Galaxy S26 Ultra
| Feature | Galaxy S26 Ultra | Galaxy S27 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 214g | 218g rumored |
| Thickness | 7.9mm | 7.9mm rumored |
| Battery | 5,000mAh | Around 5,700mAh rumored |
| Main camera | 200MP | New 200MP sensor rumored |
| Telephoto | 50MP + additional telephoto | 50MP 5x system rumored |
| Software | Android 16 / One UI generation | Android 17 / new One UI generation rumored |
| Launch status | Official | Expected in 2027 |
The S26 Ultra figures in the table come from Samsung's official specifications, while the S27 Ultra information is based on current leaks and should not be treated as final.
Samsung May Be Trading a Few Grams for More Endurance
The Galaxy S27 Ultra's rumored 218-gram weight does not represent a major physical change by itself. The more interesting story is that Samsung could potentially increase battery capacity while keeping the phone just as thin.
If the 5,700mAh battery rumor eventually proves accurate, the extra four grams could be a relatively small price for a substantially larger power cell. At the same time, Samsung appears to be continuing its effort to keep the Ultra considerably lighter than some competing large flagship phones.
For now, however, 218 grams remains a leak rather than an official specification. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to arrive in 2027, and Samsung could change its hardware before launch. Until the company officially reveals the device, the reported weight, battery capacity and camera specifications should all be treated as early information rather than confirmed specifications.
