OpenAI Models Enter Google Cloud Private Preview, With Wider Access Planned in Weeks
OpenAI’s frontier models are coming to Google Cloud’s Model Garden through a partnership that expands how enterprises can buy and use them. Google says GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to selected enterprise customers; OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks.
The distinction matters: the announcement is not an unrestricted launch for every Google Cloud account. Companies seeking access currently need to enter the preview process.
Purchasing moves into the existing cloud relationship
The models will be transacted through Google Cloud Marketplace, with usage appearing on the Google Cloud invoice and drawing down eligible cloud spending commitments. That lets an enterprise evaluate OpenAI models within a platform where it already manages procurement, identity and governance.
Google describes Astra as its option for demanding coding, computer-use and professional tasks, Sol as a lower-cost alternative with near-Astra capabilities, and Luna as a faster, cost-efficient model for everyday work. Those descriptions are the provider’s positioning, not independent performance findings.
The preview also supports connecting local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google’s platform for inference. Availability in additional Google products is described as coming later.
Some security features are still on the roadmap
Google says the offering includes authenticated identities, unified audit logging and data-perimeter controls, and that customer prompts and outputs are not used to train foundation models. Its announcement explicitly places Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute in the “coming soon” category.
Regulated organizations should therefore distinguish capabilities available in the preview from controls promised for a later release. A provider’s governance description is not automatic confirmation that every planned workload meets a customer’s particular compliance requirements.
Rivals broaden their commercial ties
The agreement adds model distribution to the companies’ existing infrastructure relationship while they continue competing in AI products. OpenAI’s announcement says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
For enterprise teams, the immediate change is a new route to evaluate and procure OpenAI models under their Google Cloud relationship, rather than a requirement to replace their existing model stack.
