Anthropic Appoints Christopher Stubbs to Its Long-Term Benefit Trust

Anthropic has appointed experimental physicist Christopher Stubbs, a former Harvard University dean of science, to its Long-Term Benefit Trust. The oversight body has authority to appoint a majority of the Claude developer’s board and advises leadership on decisions involving AI risks and societal impacts.

The appointment is to the trust, not an announcement that Stubbs has taken a seat on Anthropic’s corporate board. The company says trustees are independent of its management and investors.

Scientific experience joins the oversight structure

Stubbs is a Harvard professor of physics and astronomy and served as dean of science from 2018 to 2024. As part of the High-Z Supernova Search Team, he helped discover the accelerating expansion of the universe in 1998.

His background also includes precision measurement, work as the inaugural project scientist for what became the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and membership in JASON, the independent scientific group that advises the US government.

Anthropic says his more recent writing has examined reproducibility in AI-assisted research, including the challenge of models producing different answers to the same question. That brings a practical scientific-method issue into a body focused on long-term AI oversight.

A trust separate from ordinary management

Stubbs is the trust’s first physicist. He joins chair Neil Buddy Shah, national-security expert Richard Fontaine and former Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke.

Anthropic operates as a Public Benefit Corporation. Its announcement describes the trust as a mechanism for maintaining the balance between commercial growth and its public-benefit purpose, using both board-appointment authority and advice on significant decisions.
