Spotify Launches Podcast Memberships With 90% Revenue Share for Creators
Spotify is giving podcast hosts a more flexible way to charge dedicated listeners. Its new Memberships feature is rolling out in 34 markets, allowing eligible shows to bundle paid benefits into tiers while creators keep 90% of the revenue they generate.
The company announced the rollout on October 20. Rather than prescribing one subscription package, Spotify lets creators decide whether to offer exclusive audio or video, bonus episodes, early access, archive access or fewer advertisements. Fewer ads does not necessarily mean an entirely ad-free show.
Paid benefits for Free and Premium listeners
Both Spotify Free and Premium users can find available memberships on a show’s page. GSMArena reports that creators can offer up to three tiers and that checkout takes place on the web, while member content remains accessible through Spotify. A Premium subscription should not be confused with joining a particular podcast’s paid membership.
Prices are set by creators, not by a single platform-wide tariff. The $4.99 monthly price shown in Spotify’s example materials is an illustration, not a required price for every show.
Who can qualify
Spotify says eligible shows must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have at least three published episodes, and reach 100 listeners or viewers plus 100 consumption hours on Spotify in the previous 30 days. The audience and listening requirements make this a program for shows with an established minimum level of activity, not automatic monetization for every new upload.
Creators also get tools for targeted promotions, free trials and signup analytics. Exportable member information includes contact details only from fans who choose to share them, according to Spotify. Early participants include The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, Two Hot Takes and YMH Studios, which is bringing the feature to 12 shows.
The initial rollout includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia and multiple European markets, alongside Hong Kong and Singapore. Bangladesh and India are not on Spotify’s initial list. Memberships add direct fan payments to existing advertising, sponsorship and Spotify Partner Program income rather than replacing those revenue sources.
