Walmart Opens Agent Gateway and Plans Spending Controls for AI Shopping

Walmart is opening a more structured route for AI assistants to shop on customers’ behalf, introducing an Agent Gateway and announcing separate controls for automated purchases. Agent Profiles, scheduled to roll out in November, will let shoppers authorize individual agents and distinguish their orders from purchases made directly.

The controls include spending limits or approval for each transaction, separate purchase tracking and the ability to revoke an agent’s access. A Walmart+ subscription will not be required, according to the retailer’s announcement as reported by Reuters and TechCrunch.

Approved access rather than unrestricted browsing

The Walmart Agent Gateway uses the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, to connect approved assistants with Walmart and Sam’s Club systems. Its intended functions include searching inventory and completing purchases. That does not mean every third-party bot automatically receives permission to transact.

TechCrunch reported that an Agent Profile will be created when a shopper first uses a particular assistant through the Gateway, with authorization linking the profile to the customer’s account. Customers can then set the relevant approval or spending rules.

Payment information stays outside the agent

Walmart says agents must not access customers’ payment-card information or act beyond the shopper’s intent. Agents breaching the retailer’s terms can be blocked. Those restrictions are important because the ability to find a product is different from permission to spend money.

The retailer also says its returns process applies to agent purchases, including situations where an assistant does not behave as intended, TechCrunch reported. The announcement therefore addresses accountability as well as convenience.

The Gateway and November profile rollout are separate parts of the plan. Shoppers should check the controls available on their own accounts and the particular assistant’s approved integration rather than assume that all advertised capabilities are already enabled everywhere.
