Tesla says demand is strong as Q3 deliveries exceeded production

Backlog expanded while profitability weakened

Tesla’s third-quarter results offered a mixed signal on demand. The electric-vehicle maker produced roughly 464,000 vehicles and delivered just over 486,000, meaning deliveries exceeded production by more than 22,000 units as inventory was reduced. Tesla also said it ended the quarter with its largest passenger-car backlog in four years.

That evidence supports management’s claim that demand remains strong, but it does not erase weaker financial trends. Automotive revenue fell 3% year over year to $20.56 billion, while total revenue was approximately $28 billion, essentially flat. GAAP net income dropped 43% to $787 million. Electrive noted that lower average selling prices and a sharp decline in regulatory-credit revenue contributed to the margin pressure.

Tesla highlighted record production at Gigafactory Berlin, record deliveries in several markets and the start of series production of the Tesla Semi. The delivery-production gap should be read as an inventory and order-fulfillment signal rather than proof that every market is supply constrained. Tesla no longer provides a formal production or sales target, leaving backlog, regional deliveries and factory output as the main indicators available to investors.
