SafePay Ransomware Advisory Says at Least 600 Victims Were Hit
A joint advisory issued on October 20 says SafePay ransomware has affected at least 600 victims across multiple critical-infrastructure sectors and regions. The warning comes from CISA, the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and international partners.
A campaign active since 2024
The advisory traces SafePay activity to August 2024. Reported methods include credential attacks and exploitation of known vulnerabilities, followed by data theft, encryption and extortion.
Those tactics expose organizations to more than an interruption of access. Theft creates a separate risk even where systems can be restored, while encryption and extortion add pressure after the initial compromise.
What the victim count means
The figure is an agency-identified minimum, not a definitive count of every SafePay victim worldwide. It should therefore be reported as at least 600, rather than a complete global total.
Organizations assessing their exposure can consult the joint advisory for the agencies’ technical findings and recommended defensive actions.
