Prosecutors say ex-OpenAI engineer appears to have Saudi backing
US prosecutors say ex-OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan appears to have received considerable Saudi government support. Reuters reported the allegations from a court filing seeking to keep him in custody as a flight risk.
Prosecutors alleged Alfozan communicated frequently with an unnamed Saudi royal-family member and that a Saudi military official paid for a one-way ticket for his wife and young son after his arrest. They cited messages about recruiting him for an AI role in Saudi Arabia.
These are allegations in a detention memo, not a finding that Saudi Arabia directed the alleged recording. Saudi officials and Alfozan’s lawyer had not responded to Reuters. His lawyer said a planned Saudi trip was booked for family and immigration reasons.
The underlying case concerns a device behind a television in an OpenAI executive conference room. The Justice Department says Alfozan was charged with intercepting oral communications and that a second similar device was found in his bag. The FBI investigation remains active and prosecutors said more charges could follow. This article covers the new alleged backing development.
