Meta apologizes after temporarily suspending No Kings Instagram account
Meta apologized after temporarily suspending the Instagram account used by the No Kings protest movement. The company said a sharp rise in activity looked like automated bot traffic rather than ordinary human browsing.
Meta spokesman Andy Stone said systems detected a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags in intense bursts on October 17. The company said the sequential requests incorrectly triggered automated protections and took the account offline for more than an hour; restoring access took longer.
The suspension occurred during a nationwide round of No Kings demonstrations focused on President Donald Trump’s policies. Organizers said Meta’s explanation did not account for reports that No Kings and early-voting content was inaccessible, restricted or apparently suppressed elsewhere on Meta platforms.
The incident shows the tension between automated defenses and political communication near an election. Meta’s apology acknowledges an error, but Reuters did not establish intentional suppression or improper conduct by Claude’s operator. The coalition called for answers, accountability and safeguards.
