Meta earnings set to test whether AI spending can become growth
Meta’s third-quarter report will put its rapidly rising AI investment, advertising momentum and Muse assistant adoption under scrutiny.
Meta earnings set to test whether AI spending can become growth
Meta’s third-quarter results are expected to answer two linked questions: whether its advertising engine remains strong enough to fund the AI build-out, and whether the company’s Muse assistant can become more than an expensive experiment.
Analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha estimated capital expenditure at $41.68 billion for the September quarter, more than double the year-earlier level. Reuters reported that the spending had squeezed second-quarter free cash flow and that analysts expected an $8.52 billion cash burn in the third quarter. Wall Street was looking for revenue growth of 23.8% to $63.42 billion, but net income was expected to fall about 17% to $15.44 billion.
Muse adds a commercial test
Meta has rolled out AI services for consumers and businesses, including a subscription-bearing Muse assistant. Recent launches and the latest models have improved investor confidence, while analysts cited healthy ad demand and raised some longer-term estimates. Yet the size of the infrastructure commitment leaves little room for weak monetisation. The results therefore matter less as a download count than as an early test of whether AI products, subscriptions and advertising can eventually offset the cash and capacity demanded by Meta’s expansion.
