Far-Left Leader Mélenchon in Firing Line as France Blame Game Heats Up

What happened

Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his France Unbowed party are facing attacks from across France’s political spectrum as officials and rival parties argue over responsibility for the country’s worst civil unrest in years, Reuters reported on October 22.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu accused LFI of pursuing a political agenda that instils violence and chaos. The centre, the right and the far right have also criticised Mélenchon’s confrontational rhetoric, with some calling for LFI to be banned. Mélenchon rejects the accusations, arguing that the government’s failure to address inequality and hardship in poorer suburbs is driving the unrest.

The dispute is unfolding as Mélenchon seeks a fourth presidential run and remains the strongest hard-left contender for reaching the 2027 runoff. Polling cited by Reuters shows particular support among younger voters and people in poorer urban areas, although analysts say the violence narrative could reinforce his weakness with older voters.

Former President François Hollande warned against making one politician the sole explanation for the upheaval. The episode is therefore both a contest over the causes of the unrest and an early test of France’s increasingly fragmented presidential race.
