Macron calls Trump’s France-riot comments “unacceptable” and “stupid”
French president says foreign leaders used unrest for political ends
French President Emmanuel Macron rebuked foreign commentary about France’s recent protests and rioting, calling the remarks “unacceptable” and “stupid.” Speaking to reporters, Macron said foreign disinformation had prompted the comments and clarified that Donald Trump was among the leaders he meant. Trump had blamed France’s unrest on “migrants, jihadists, and Communists” and urged Europe to close its borders. Macron said politicians were using the turmoil for their own purposes as France faced continuing demonstrations, political tension and worsening investor concern over its finances. Student and Yellow Vest groups were calling for more rallies, while French officials prepared additional security measures. The comments were made against a backdrop of protests over public services, living costs and political leadership; CNBC also reported that France’s 10-year borrowing yield had reached a 24-year high.
