India Smartphone Shipments Fall 26% in Q3 2026 to Lowest Level Since 2016
India’s smartphone market contracted sharply in the third quarter of 2026, with shipments falling 26% year over year to 35.8 million units, according to Omdia. The July–September total was the country’s lowest third-quarter shipment volume since 2016.
Shipments track devices sent into the market, rather than purchases by individual consumers.
Higher prices reshape vendor performance
Omdia attributed the contraction to higher smartphone prices, cautious consumer spending and weaker replacement demand. Vendors responded with more conservative inventory strategies. Weak online-focused shipments added pressure, while Diwali’s later timing shifted part of the offline festive inventory build from September into October.
Samsung returned to first place for the first time since the first quarter of 2024, shipping 6.7 million units. vivo ranked second at 6.4 million units, down 34% year over year, followed by OPPO at 4.9 million, down 24%, and Xiaomi at 4.7 million, down 28%. Apple placed fifth with 3.9 million units.
A weaker quarter after 2025 growth
For context, IDC reported that India’s shipments grew 4.3% year over year to 48 million units in Q3 2025. That earlier result was supported by premium demand and festive promotions.
