Google restored its London cloud region after a power event disrupted banks, public services and other websites, renewing questions about concentration risk in critical cloud infrastructure.
Google Cloud UK outage exposes dependence on critical cloud infrastructure
Google said it restored full availability in its London-based europe-west2 region on October 20 after an hours-long power event. Revolut reported effects on card payments and ATM withdrawals, while Lloyds, HSBC, Rightmove, DPD, NHS England and Royal Mail were among services reporting issues or investigating them.
The incident matters because the region is a network of data centres and availability zones supporting customers across Europe. The UK had already placed Google Cloud, Microsoft, AWS and Oracle under direct oversight as critical third-party suppliers to finance.
Google described recovery, not a detailed root-cause analysis, in the Reuters accounts. The Financial Conduct Authority said it was engaging with Google and affected firms. The episode underlines the need for tested failover, multi-cloud planning and clear communications when a regional failure reaches customer-facing systems.
