Former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic, Bloomberg reported, a holding that could become a major individual windfall if the AI company goes public. Reuters said the report cited people familiar with the matter.
Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic’s Series A, according to the report. It was unclear whether he has sold any of the stake, and neither Anthropic nor Schmidt’s representatives immediately responded to Reuters.
The value depends on Anthropic’s eventual IPO price and the number of shares Schmidt still owns. Reuters said some investors discussed a valuation around $1.5 trillion, below earlier expectations near $2 trillion; that is investor discussion, not a confirmed offering price.
Schmidt led Google from 2001 to 2011 and later served as Alphabet’s executive chairman. Amazon and Google are early Anthropic backers and provide cloud capacity for Claude. The report shows how early frontier-AI financing can create substantial exposure before a listing.
