Akash Ambani Takes a Larger Role as Jio Platforms Heads to Market

Akash Ambani is taking a more visible role in Reliance Industries’ telecom and digital businesses as Jio Platforms approaches a public listing. Reuters reported that the $3.2 billion offering was fully subscribed within two hours of opening to public bidding.

Akash, who turned 35 on Friday, is managing director of Jio Platforms. He became chairman of the company’s telecom unit in 2022, a move widely viewed as part of succession planning for the family-controlled conglomerate.

A public face for Jio’s next phase

Akash led the pitch at a Jio Platforms IPO event, discussing the company’s 533 million customers and profit margins. His twin sister also appeared, while Mukesh Ambani did not attend. Executives who work with Akash described him to Reuters as hands-on with technology and involved in larger strategic decisions, while day-to-day management remains with operating teams.

Jio’s business still depends heavily on connectivity. Reuters said telecom accounted for nearly 90% of Jio Platforms’ $15.45 billion in revenue and about 94% of its profit. The company is trying to present itself as more than a mobile operator, pointing to apps, digital services, home devices and artificial-intelligence features.

From 4G and 5G to AI services

Jio has said it is developing AI-powered call summaries and transcription in 12 Indian languages. Its official platform material also describes JioBrain as a 5G-integrated machine-learning platform for communications providers and enterprises.

The IPO gives public investors a closer look at both the family succession story and Jio’s effort to turn a huge customer base into a broader technology platform. It does not remove the company’s dependence on telecom economics, but it raises the profile of the next generation of Reliance leadership.
